Brothers Redevelopment announced today it has received a $400,000 grant from The Colorado Health Foundation (CHF) to expand housing services for residents living in Commerce City, East Denver and Aurora over the next two years. The agency will use the grant to provide housing navigation that connects residents with resources to improve their housing stability.
Specifically, the funding will enable Brothers Redevelopment to increase its staff to provide rental, mortgage and household financial assistance to the area’s struggling renters and homeowners. East metro residents also will be able to work with housing counselors, who can help them avoid foreclosure or eviction, find an affordable place to live or learn how to build their credit to purchase their first home.
Elders in the east metro area also will benefit from Brothers Redevelopment’s suite of services tailored to help them age in place, including home repairs that can help them maintain their homes as they get older or home modifications that can help them stay in their homes longer, safely and with greater independence over time.
Brothers Redevelopment’s expansion of services reflects the broader need for housing support across the eastern metro area.
Nearly half of the inquiries the agency collectively receives from East Denver, Aurora and Commerce City through its housing helpline, Colorado Housing Connects helpline (1-844-926-6632), are related to rent and utility assistance. Requests related to default and foreclosure prevention have more than doubled over the past year in the same areas, while questions for support among senior homeowners — typically related to home modifications like the installation of ramps and grab bars — grew approximately 34%.
“Every day, we meet people who are working hard to stay in their homes but need someone to help them navigate an increasingly unaffordable and complex housing system,” said Jeff Martinez, president of Brothers Redevelopment. “This funding strengthens our ability to help our neighbors in the Eastern Denver metro area and connect them with practical, proven housing solutions.”
This is the second time The Colorado Health Foundation has funded Brothers Redevelopment to serve area residents. With support from the foundation over the past two years, Brothers Redevelopment provided similar assistance to residents in Denver’s East Colfax neighborhood — serving more than 700 households through housing navigation and providing more than $35,000 in financial assistance.
Additionally, the Brothers’ housing portfolio has grown to five affordable communities offering more than 293 apartments in East Denver and Aurora. A sixth community, Wagoner on the Creek, began construction in early August and will add another 60 units for income-qualified tenants, as well as on-site services.
“This investment allows us to build on the work we’ve already done in these communities and reach more residents who are struggling to find or maintain stable housing,” said Martinez. “We’re grateful to The Colorado Health Foundation for continuing to invest in this work and in the people and communities we serve.”
